Spiritual Divorce – Acknowledging Debbie Ford’s Work
By Rosalind Sedacca, CCT
There's a wonderful book on the market that everyone who faces or has experienced divorce should read. It's called, Spiritual Divorce: Divorce as a Catalyst for an Extraordinary Life, by Debbie Ford. Debbie is already a well known author. She wrote the #1 New York Times bestseller, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers. She's been interviewed on Oprah and all the national morning news shows. But more importantly, she offers a very valuable message.
In Spiritual Divorce, Debbie explains how we can experience the changing of adult relationships in a way that does not have to produce anger, resentment and the enormous challenges in parenting, including maintaining meaningful father-child or mother-child relationships. She reveals how divorce devastation can be transformed into a profoundly enlightening experience. Debbie shows how the collapse of a marriage is, at its root, "a spiritual wake-up call, an opportunity to liberate ourselves and reclaim our lives." She offers a set of guidelines for turning "ruin into renewal."
Within the book Debbie shares her own story of divorce and the life-changing tools she used to reach what she calls the seven spiritual laws for healing. By understanding these laws -- acceptance, surrender, divine guidance, responsibility, choice, forgiveness and creation - she shows you how you can break through your fears and dissolve your pain. At that point you can also reach a place of understanding that clarifies the deeper meaning in the events of your life.
There is deep wisdom in her message. Her goal is to assist you in making peace with your past, purging toxic emotions and liberating yourself from old behavior patterns. Are you brave enough to look at your patterns, take responsibility for the part you have played in your drama, and be willing to make constructive changes? It's worth the effort. Only when you're clear about your life can you truly open the door to making new love possible.
Debbie contends that the end of your marriage can be the first step to spiritual transformation. Her gift is the ability to show you how to use your divorce so that it doesn't use you! The jacket of the book says, "Spiritual Divorce can help you reclaim your personal power, your job, and the freedom to create the life of your dreams." It's no exaggeration. Part of creating a child-centered divorce is creating a healthy relationship with your ex. Why not start that process now?
